Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Gi classes at Bendu Academy offer an immersive experience into the world of traditional ground combat, leveraging the Gi—often referred to as a "kimono"—as a fundamental element of the practice. Originating from the ancient samurai arts of Japan and subsequently refined in Brazil, BJJ with the Gi is not just a martial art; it's a philosophy that emphasizes technique, leverage, and the intellectual over brute strength, allowing smaller practitioners to overcome larger opponents.
Beginning with the basics, participants learn the art of 'the roll'—the foundational skill of moving and controlling one's body on the ground. This fundamental skill set paves the way for mastering more complex techniques, including joint locks, chokeholds, and the strategic use of the Gi to control and submit the opponent. The Gi, with its grips and handles, becomes an extension of the practitioner's body, offering unique opportunities for leverage and control not found in no-Gi variants.
Each class is structured to deepen the understanding of BJJ's core principles: leverage, timing, and energy efficiency. Students practice drills for agility, flexibility, and strength - crucial for executing techniques with precision and safety. Live sparring ("rolling") enables students to apply what they've learned in dynamic, real-world scenarios against each other - fostering an environment of mutual learning and adaptation.
